Monzo has confirmed that a technical problem affecting some customers' ability to make card payments and bank transfers has been resolved.
Earlier, the digital bank announced on X that it had identified issues with some of its services. To keep essential banking functions available, Monzo activated its backup service, known as Monzo Stand-in.
The backup system was designed to allow customers to continue using important features, including making card payments, withdrawing cash, freezing cards, and sending or receiving bank transfers.
One customer reported being unable to use their Monzo card, while another said they could not make bank transfers through the backup system.
Monzo later confirmed that its services had returned to normal. A spokesperson for the digital bank apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience while the technical issue was being resolved.
What Happened to Monzo?
Monzo is a UK-based digital bank that launched in 2015 with a mobile-first banking model. Unlike traditional banks, Monzo focuses heavily on its smartphone app rather than physical branches.
The company has grown significantly since its launch and now serves millions of personal and business customers.
Monzo Stand-in Backup Service
During the latest technical issue, Monzo advised customers that its Monzo Stand-in service could be used for essential banking activities while its main systems were being restored.
Although the backup service worked for some customers, others continued to experience difficulties before the issue was completely resolved.
For customers who experienced failed payments or transfer problems, Monzo's latest confirmation indicates that its services are now back up and running.
If you are still experiencing problems with the Monzo app, card payments, or bank transfers, check Monzo's latest official service updates and contact customer support if necessary.
Monzo App Technical Issue and Outage
Thousands of Monzo customers are currently unable to access their accounts through the app because of a major technical issue.
When some customers attempt to log in, they are shown a message stating: “We’re experiencing issues. Your app will not be fully functional.”
An automated phone message, meanwhile, reassures customers: “Don’t worry, your money is safe and your card should work as normal.”
Monzo Activates Monzo Stand-in
In a post on X, Monzo said: “We’ve identified some issues affecting Monzo and activated Monzo Stand-in, our fully independent back-up bank.”
The bank said that, as a result, customers could still make card payments, withdraw cash, freeze their cards, and send and receive bank transfers.
Thousands of Customers Report Monzo Problems
DownDetector recorded a sharp increase in Monzo outage reports shortly after midday, with thousands of customers reporting problems.
Monzo Confirms Technical Issue
A Monzo spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “We’re currently experiencing a technical issue and are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”
The spokesperson added that Monzo had moved to its backup system, Monzo Stand-in, allowing customers to continue using most features of the app, including bank transfers, card payments and ATM withdrawals.
Monzo Customer Growth
Founded in 2015, Monzo has more than 15 million retail customers and recently announced that it had become the first digital bank to reach one million business customers.
Gary Hoffman to Step Down as Monzo Chairman
Earlier in the week, it was also announced that Monzo chairman Gary Hoffman would step down after seven years with the digital bank. Hoffman, an industry veteran who previously led Northern Rock following its government rescue during the financial crisis, is expected to leave in early September.
Monzo board member Karen Peacock will serve as interim chairwoman while the company searches for a permanent replacement.
